Alumni successfully stages Alapparungkarunai in Colombo
The organizing committee of the Alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Jaffna successfully transferred the production of the Tamil dance drama Alapparungkarunai from Jaffna to Colombo. After three very well received performances in Jaffna at the Faculty’s own Hoover auditorium it was held on Saturday 15th August at the Ramakrishna Hall in Wellawatte. An audience of close to four hundred witnessed another entrancing performance of Alapparungkarunai which is based on Rabindranath Tagore’s play ‘Sanyasi’. Many knowledgeable from amongst the audience commented on the high quality of the program. Amongst the audience were many alumni members from a wide ranging group of batches and it gave them the opportunity to meet up with old friends, teachers and acquaintances.
Transferring a production of this size and quality successfully is greatly to the credit not just of all involved in the production but to the organizing committee, medical students from the 35th batch and recently qualified doctors who went to Colombo to make the necessary arrangements.
The organizing committee has fulfilled a dual role with Alapparungkarunai. It has sponsored a unique dance drama production which has showcased the talents of Jaffna’s artistic community both in Jaffna and in Colombo. It has also been able to utilize this for the worthy cause of raising funds to expand hostel facilities for medical students. The Alumni around the country and students who helped can take great pride in this effort.
