SARS nCoV2 RT-PCR Diagnostic Function
The entire globe is shut down due to the COVID -19 pandemic, including Sri Lanka. In order to combat this crisis, number of correct and early diagnosis and the community screening of the suspects are crucial. Considering the above fact, Sri Lankan Government decided to establish utmost number of Laboratories by effectively mobilizing the resources available all over the country.
In this context, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Higher Education requested the Director, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna and the Competent Authority, University of Jaffna respectively, to establish a regional diagnostic laboratory in northern region to cater the diagnostic need of the region, utilizing the available human and physical resources.
With this background, Director, Teaching Hospital, Jaffna and the Dean Faculty of Medicine jointly embarked on this historical endeavor at the Faculty of Medicine with the available resources in both institutions.
As a result, a team was formed, comprising necessary expertise and visited to the Kandy virology Laboratory. Dr Rohitha Muthugala, virologist in charge of the above laboratory kindly provided the necessary training and continuous support.
Further, Dr Saranga Sumathipala virologist attached to the Teaching Hospital, Anuradhapura, covering up the authorization of the laboratory results. The SARS CoV-2 diagnosis has been started at the laboratory of the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna on 04.04.2020. Currently, the laboratory is fully functional and offering the diagnostic and community screening services for the COVID-19 suspected individuals in the region.
