Jaffna Teaching Hospital

The Teaching Hospital, Jaffna serves as the place for clinical teaching for the Faculty of Medicine.  This hospital is situated about 4 kilometers from the Faculty.  It has 1015 beds with the following units: General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedic surgery, Cardiology, Oncology, Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Dermatology and a unit for sexually transmitted diseases.  In addition it has a Pathological Laboratory, a Blood Bank Service, an Emergency Unit, an Intensive Care Unit, Premature Baby Unit and Primary Health Care Unit.

The Outpatients Department of this hospital has a daily turnover of about 1000 patients.  In addition an average of 1000 patients are seen at the specialist’s clinics.  An outpatient’s clinic for leprosy patients is also conducted.

The hospital is under the administrative control of a Director of the Teaching Hospital.

Psychiatry Unit is functioning at the Base Hospital, Thellipallai but the clinics are conducted both at the Teaching Hospital Jaffna and the Base Hospital, Thelliapllai.

Medical Education and Audiovisual unit

The Unit functions with the objectives of training teachers in teaching methodology, curriculum medelopment and introducing new concepts in Medical Education to the Faculty.  It arranges workshops and short courses.  The Medical Education Cell supervises the Unit.  The audiovisual section provides facilities to medelop audio-visual teaching materials, health education material and documenting research.

Libraries

Medical Library 

The Medical Library located in the first floor of the Faculty.  It is a branch of the University library system.  It has book collection of approximately 10,000 volumes and a good collection of periodicals, 65 titles on regular subscription and a large collection of bound and unbound journals.

The Library is linked to the Health Literature Library Information Services Network (HELLIS), Sri Lanka, organized under the aegis of the World Health Organisation.

 

Main University Library

This is situated in the University Main premises about 1/2 km. from the Medical Faculty.  There is ample material for general reading.

 

The Jaffna Medical Association Library

The Jaffna Medical Association has established a library at the Teaching Hospital and it provides service to doctors and student members day and night continuously.
