Elective

The elective programme in Paediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine, Jaffna gives a variety of exposure to tropical diseases, medelopmental paediatrics, paediatric cardiology and community paediatrics.

You also get an opportunity to participate in ongoing research activities undertaken at the department.

There is no structured programme during the electives. You will be attached in ward number 11 of the Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.  This is the main tertiary care health facility of the region hence you get a good exposure to various diseases of the children.

There are several activities undertaken by the department.  There are daily ward rounds, three times a week consultant run clinics and daily teaching rounds.  Other regular activities are journal clubs and clinical meetings held every month.  One other major activity is having a multi-disciplinary clinic for medelopmental disorders.  You get an experience in working in a resource limited setting especially when you attend these clinics.

We also celebrate important children days like world children’s day, Autism day and Down syndrome day.

Minimum duration of the elective is one week and maximum is eight weeks.  Prerequisite for the appointment is you have to be a registered student in an undergraduate medical degree of a university.

You are welcome to participate in all activities of the department.
