The Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, has received a theatre table and theatre light in fond memory of Dr. Naganathar from his family. These contributions will enhance our operating theatre facilities, support training for medical professionals, and improve healthcare for the local community, serving as a lasting tribute to his memory. Additionally, we have received three anaesthetic machines and ward furnishings from Dr Naganathar’s family friends.
Dr. Selliah and Indira Naganathar of the Chankanai Maternity & Nursing Home were more than just physicians – they were pillars of their community, devoted to the care and well-being of those around them. Both graduated from the University of Colombo, Faculty of Medicine, in 1970. They had a shared dream: to build a hospital that would serve the people they loved.
That dream came to life in 1978 with the opening of the Chankanai Maternity & Nursing Home. It got gradually developed into 40 bed hospital, one theatre, one labour room, X-ray and other investigation facilities and a dental chair. The hospital was built with the care and skill of local artisans, reflecting not only the Naganathars’ dedication but also the spirit and support of the community itself.
Through the 1980s, even as the civil war made access to healthcare uncertain, the hospital remained a steadfast place of hope. Esteemed physicians and surgeons regularly joined the Naganathars, lending their skills to ensure the hospital kept running smoothly.
For countless families, the Chankanai Maternity & Nursing Home is remembered with deep affection. It was a place that stood by them in their most difficult moments, nurtured and sustained by two extraordinary doctors whose compassion and commitment never wavered.
Eventually, in 1990, they were finally forced to leave Jaffna. At this point, they moved abroad but continued to support the running of their hospital remotely till 1995.
Following their careers in England, Dr. Selliah Naganathar passed away in 2023 in London. He is fondly remembered and survived by Dr. Indira Naganathar, their children, and grandchildren.
