Fundamental Critical care Course Paediatrics
Held at the Department of Paediatrics, CTRB on the 7th and 8th of October 2025
The FCCS:Pediatrics is a comprehensive, two-day course addressing fundamental management principles for the first 24 hours of pediatric critical care. The course was developed by the Society of Critical Care Medicine [SCCM]. Existing courses such as APLS focus on resuscitation and stabilization.
Using a combination of didactic lectures and innovative hands-on skill stations, the 2-day FCCS:Pediatrics course provides a comprehensive approach to managing the critically ill and injured child. Flexibility in course programming allows for the selection of a list of core (mandatory) and optional lectures, as well as defined skill stations, to tailor the course content to the target audience. Additional flexibility exists in the skill stations based on available resources: low-fidelity vs. high-fidelity.
A total of 30 doctors and nurses participated in the workshop. The skills were to prioritize assessment needs for the critically ill or injured infant and child, select appropriate diagnostic tests, identify and respond to significant changes in the unstable pediatric patient, recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions and to determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer to a PICU and prepare the practitioner for optimally accomplishing transfer. The workshop consisted of didactic lectures, interactive workshops and skill stations.
Participants had access to online learning material along with pre and post course evaluations. At the end they received a certificate of completion. Some participants were selected as instructor candidates for future courses.
