Three days residential training of trainer workshop on rights- based service provision in elderly care for health care & community- based workers involved in the care of the elderly in Mannar and Anuradhapura districts, Sri Lanka was held on 19th, 20th and 21st of March 2024, at MAS Athena Training Centre, Thulhiriya.

This training was implemented by Christian Blind Mission (CBM) in collaborated with University of Jaffna. The resources from Faculty of Medicine of University of Jaffna, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences of Rajarata University and Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka participated. Prof R Surenthirakumaran, Prof S Sivayokan, Dr PAD Coonghe, Dr N Prabu, and Ms S Sasrubi joined from Faculty of Medicine of University of Jaffna, Prof.W.A.N.D. Wickramasinghe, Dr. P. Janaka, and Dr. Amila Isuru joined from Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences of Rajarata University, and Dr Jagath Dayarathna joined from Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka.

The Medical Officers, MOHs, Nursing Officers, Public Health Nurses from Anuradhapura, and Mannar districts, total fifty participants attended the training.

The main topics were Aging, The depth and breadth of the problems, The problems of aging, Using medicines in old age, Dying, death, and beyond, Right based care, Being a care giver, Basic counselling skills required for elderly care, Preventive health in old age and Ageing preparedness. In parrel to the common sessions, the participants were divided according to their mother tongue language and interactive sessions were carried out using case scenarios, group discussions, role plays, debates, etc.

A manual was prepared by the resource team and provided to the participants. All the participants were provided with Certificates of participation.
