The University of Jaffna and the International Medical Health Organisation have joined up to launch a revolutionary Community-led Cancer Prevention Programme. The project, titled “Holistic Approach to Preventing Common Cancers,” aims to transform cancer prevention strategies in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, specifically targeting Breast, Oral, Gastrointestinal, Cervical, Genitourinary, and Lung Cancers.

The Kilinochchi District was designated as the primary testing area as the strategic centre for this ground breaking programme. The project has a $7 million dedicated yearly budget, reflecting the significant commitment to this essential endeavour.

Under the technical leadership of the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, the program will benefit from the profound expertise of the CODE, Faculty of Medicine, ensuring seamless implementation and execution of this ambitious initiative. This collaborative effort marks a significant leap forward in cancer prevention, signalling a concerted effort toward comprehensive community health in the region.
